Sawyer Complete Streets Vision
Streetscape Designs and Concept Plan for a New Arts District in Houston
Different typologies and sections respond to the proposed land uses
This project began as a streetscape design for Sawyer Street in the historic Old Sixth Ward. The corridor connects a network of parks along Buffalo Bayou -- Houston's most significant waterway -- with a historic residential neighborhood, an emerging commercial corridor, and the popular MKT bike trail. The roadway was redesigned as a complete street by expanding the pedestrian realm, realigning travel lanes, and introducing traffic calming features.
Over the course of the project, it became clear that the inactive industrial area at the northern end of the corridor was the site of several artists studios and ripe for redevelopment. Subsequently, the design team worked closely with the Old Sixth Ward Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ #18), a local arts alliance, and several significant landowners, to develop a conceptual plan for a mixed-use arts district.
